ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The next host of KMOX's Sports Open Line on weeknights from 6-8pm will be St. Louis native and award-winning actor Jon Hamm!
Just kidding. But he could do it and people would love it.
If you want a taste of what it would be like to hear the "Mad Men" star hosting a sports talk show, just watch his appearance on the Garage Happy Hour with KMOX's Tom Ackerman on Thursday. He dove into breakdowns of the St. Louis Blues season, explained why Cardinals fans should be patient with Nolan Arenado and talked about his excitement to for this year's Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony which he was personally invited to by one of the inductees.
Let's start with the last part. Did you know Hamm has known Ted Simmons, former Cardinals catcher and new Hall of Famer? The St. Louis-born actor and Simmons' son were best friends growing up together.
Hamm says he unfortunately won't be able to go to this summer's ceremony, but said he's excited to see Simmons go into "the big boy Hall of Fame."
Can speaking of Cardinals Hall of Famers ... How about the Arenado trade?
"There's so much good about that move that I was like, 'Wait? We did what?'" Hamm says. "Look, he doesn't have to come out and hit 200 home runs and bat .750 for it to be a win. He's gonna find his place in the lineup, in the community, in the clubhouse. The whole thing, it's gonna take a while, but that's why the baseball season is as long as it is."
And how about those Blues?
"I've never seen a team in any sport get beat up by the injury that has happened to this team," Hamm says of the Blues who are currently 4th in the West Division. "I mean you could have started a pretty decent team with everyone we had on IR there for a second. It was insane."
But Hamm says the good news about the injuries has been the chance to see young players like forward Dakota Joshua, 24, get a shot.
And if any of our sports hosts go down with a sudden injury, Hamm might be our first call for a fill-in host.
