ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A.J. McCarron has reunited with the St. Louis Battlehawks.
On Friday, the Battlehawks have announced that McCarron, who was their starting quarterback last season, has agreed to contract terms and will return for the upcoming season.
McCarron joined the Battlehawks in November 2022 after eight seasons in the National Football League, mostly as a backup quarterback.
The former three-time National Championship quarterback with Alabama was terrific in St. Louis, throwing for 2,150 yards and 24 touchdowns to go with only six interceptions in the XFL. His performance led to being named 2023 league MVP.
His performance in the XFL eventually paved a path for him to return to the NFL, reuniting with the Cincinnati Bengals, the team that drafted him back in 2014. McCarron was mostly a depth option for the Bengals, replacing the injured Joe Burrow, who had faced injury troubles for all of last season. McCarron was able to get some snaps with the Bengals in 2023, appearing in two games, throwing five passes for 19 yards.
McCarron initially previously expressed hesitancy on returning to the Battlehawks in 2024 due to the new United Football League's pay structure, which is less generous compared to the XFL's. However, Battlehawks head coach Anthony Becht kept a roster spot for him in case of a return in 2024, which has now happened.
The St. Louis Battlehawks will kicked off their 2024 UFL season on the road against the Michigan Panthers on March 30 at 3 p.m. The team's home opener at the Dome At America's Center will be on April 6th at 7 p.m. against the Arlington Renegades.
