ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis Battlehawks will be looking for a new starting quarterback for next season.
On Friday, the St. Louis Battlehawks announced that they have released quarterback A.J. McCarron.
"The UFL continues to be a league of opportunity and we have come to the decision to move forward looking at new opportunities at the quarterback position. A.J. McCarron has been a tremendous part of the success of our team the last two seasons and we are grateful for all of his contributions. It's with respect for A.J. that we wanted to provide him a clear path forward as he decides what is next in his football future," Battlehawks Head Coach Anthony Becht said in a statement.
McCarron played two seasons for the Battlehawks, starting 17 games and throwing for a combined 3,782 yards, and 39 touchdown passes.
Prior to joining the Battlehawks for his first stint in 2023, McCarron spent eight seasons in the NFL, primarily as backup quarterback on the Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans and then-Oakland Raiders. After his first stint with the Battlehawks, McCarron returned to the NFL, appearing in two games for the Bengals in 2023.
McCarron returned to the Battlehawks in 2024 despite hesitancy to return after the XFL, where the Battlehawks played in 2023, merged with the USFL to become the United Football League (UFL).
Alongside a stint in the NFL, McCarron had a decorated career in college, winning three BCS national championship while at Alabama, including being the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide in their national championship victories in the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
