ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Mizzou Athletics announced Wednesday they have received one of the 10 largest gifts in the athletic program's history to enhance at the school's track and field and soccer stadium.

According to Mizzou Athletic, they received a generous philanthropic gift from longtime benefactor Audrey J. Walton, who is the wife of Bud Walton, the brother of Walmart founder Sam Walton.

The gift from Walton will pave the way for significant renovations at the Audrey J. Walton Track and Field and Soccer Stadium.

"I've always believed in the power of college athletics to impact the next generation of Tigers — and I am especially proud to support programs that empower young women and men to compete and succeed," said Walton.

The contribution from Walton will provide a complete renovation of the outdoor track surface and subsurface enabling Mizzou Athletics to host outdoor track and field competitions, along with a new natural grass soccer playing field and field subsurface.

"Mrs. Walton's passion for Mizzou and her support of our student-athletes is truly remarkable," University of Missouri Director of Athletics Laird Veatch said. "I am incredibly grateful for the 25-year relationship I've had with Mrs. Walton and her family."

Mizzou Athletics did not give specifics on how much Walton donated, but they say Walton's philanthropic gift is expected to complete the project in full.

The stadium opened in 1996 following a $1 million donation from Walton. Since it opened, it has hosted five conference championships and five NCAA soccer tournaments.

Mizzou Athletics says further details about the project timeline will be announced at a later date.
