ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - An Indiana State Center who made headlines during March Madness for his extremely wild nicknames is joining his head coach Josh Schertz at Saint Louis University.
Robbie Avila announced his commitment to Saint Louis Saturday, joining his head coach Schertz at SLU.
Avila, who still has two years of eligibility remaining, was a key piece of Schertz's offense at Indiana State, averaging 17.4 points per game, 6.6 rebounds per game and 4.1 assists per game on 53.6% field-goal percentage.
The Athletic ranked Avila as the third best player in the transfer portal, calling him 'a 6-foot-10 point guard who can also wreck in the low post and has every offensive skill', but a 'limited defender'
Avila gained notoriety during March Madness for his hilarious and wild nicknames, with some of them being Cream Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Nerd, College Jokic, Milk Chamberlain and more.
The nicknames gained so much notoriety that ESPN broadcasters Mike Corey and Fran Fraschilla were debating which nickname was the best early on in the Sycamores' tight NIT Final loss to Seton Hall.
Even sports commentator Pat McAfee had to mention to Avila's decision to enter the Transfer Portal during his show to get a chance to discuss the nicknames.
The Oak VIllage, Illinois, transfer to Saint Louis was all but guaranteed. When Avila officially put his name in the Transfer Portal, he reportedly had a do-not-contact label next to his name in the portal, indicating that it was pretty much likely Avila was heading to Saint Louis.
Schertz will now get one of his best players from Indiana State joining him in St. Louis, but he might not be the only one, with all five starters last year at Indiana State were in the transfer portal, making it possible that Schertz could bring his entire starting lineup to SLU next season.
