Blues forward suspended for illegal check to head

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) updated - The check from St. Louis Blues forward Sammy Blais on a Colorado Avalanche has resulted in a two-game suspension from the National Hockey League.

The NHL Department of Player Safety made the announcement on Thursday of the punishment for the 24-year-old's illegal check to the head of Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews. It happened in the first period of the game and Blais was given a two-minute minor penalty.

Toews left the game after the hit, but returned to play a total of 22 minutes in the Blues 4-1 victory, Wednesday night.

The last notable time Blais was in possible trouble for a hit was during the 2019 Stanley Cup Final against the Boston Bruins. This hit on David Backes did not draw a penatly, nor a punishment from the league, but was scrutinized for high contact on Backes.
