(KMOX) - Monday night's St. Louis Blues vs Minnesota Wild game has been postponed "out of a respect for the community" after civil unrest was sparked by a Black man being killed by police in Minneapolis on Sunday night.
Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association have also postponed games in the Minneapolis area on Monday.
The National Hockey League released a statement about the scheduling change, saying the game will be made up on May 12:
"The decision was made out of respect for the community, following the tragic shooting that occurred in Brooklyn Center, Minn., Sunday afternoon," the statement reads. "The National Hockey League extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Daunte Wright."
The Blues were scheduled to play the Minnesota Wild on Monday night at 7 p.m. in St. Paul, which is about 20 miles away from where the shooting happened.
A police officer fatally shot a Black man during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb on Sunday night, sparking violent protests in an area already on edge because of the trial of the first of four police officers charged in George Floyd’s death.
The MLB game was scheduled to begin at 2:05 p.m. at Target Field and players who were on the field warming up were called off minutes before the scheduled first pitch. Word came the game will not be taking place and it's not weather-related.
“Out of respect for the tragic events that occurred yesterday in Brooklyn Center, and following the additional details in this evolving situation, the Minnesota Twins have decided it is in the best interests of our fans, staff, players and community to not play today’s game," the Twins said in a statement. "The decision was made by the Minnesota Twins after consultation with Major League Baseball, and local and state officials. Information regarding the rescheduling of today’s game, and corresponding ticket details, will be released in the near future. The Minnesota Twins organization extends its sympathies to the family of Daunte Wright.”
The NBA game on Monday night between the Brooklyn Nets and Minnesota Timberwolves has also been postponed.
