ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It was only a crowd of 4,100 at Enterprise Center, but it was plenty to make a special night for former St. Louis Blues captain David Backes. Now with the Anaheim Ducks and likely to retire after this season, Backes was added to the lineup for what will surely be his final NHL game in St. Louis.
Just over 10 minutes of ice time, two hits and two shots on goal were enough to name Backes the No. 1 star in Wednesday 3-2 shootout win for the Ducks. But even if he would have only played in two shifts, the Blues already had a special moment setup just for him.
He put on the headset to be interviewed by Blues analyst Darren Pang – who was plenty emotional himself. And after the cheers of Blues fans put a few tears in his eyes, his wife, two kids and three dogs appeared on the center ice scoreboard with a special message:
Backes was a second-round draft pick by St. Louis in 2003 and he was a fan-favorite for his 10 seasons with the Blues.
He told Pang he's looking forward to becoming a member of the beloved Blues Alumni when he officially retires.
