St. Louis Blues trade defenseman Robert Bortuzzo to New York Islanders for 7th-round draft pick

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - One of the last remaining players left on the 2019 Stanley Cup-winning rosters was traded Friday by the Blues.

On Friday, the St. Louis Blues announced Friday that the team has traded defenseman Robert Bortuzzo to the New York Islanders. The Blues will receive a seventh-round draft pick from the Islanders.

While he was mostly a bottom pair defenseman during his time with the Blues, Bortuzzo was able still carve a career in St. Louis, with Bortuzzo being the longest tenured Blues player heading into the season.

Bortuzzo was originally acquired in a deal at the 2015 NHL Trade Deadline that would send Ian Cole to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Bortuzzo played 424 games over the last decade with the Blues, scoring 16 goals, 38 assists and 54 points.

With younger players on the Blues blue line like Tyler Tucker and Scott Perunovich, along with the Blues carrying eight defenseman this season, Bortuzzo didn't have a whole lot of opportunities to get ice time, with Bortuzzo only playing four out of the Blues 25 games so far this season.

Of course, Bortuzzo will be memorable for his time with the Blues, with his most notable moment during his time being his fight with Zach Sanford in practice that would become a memorable moment during the team's eventual Cup run.

Bortuzzo is in the final year of a two-year deal worth $1.9 million he signed with the Blues. With a cap hit of just $950,000 he was a relatively inexpensive pickup by the Islanders.

With the trade, Blues Captain Brayden Schenn, forward Robert Thomas, defenseman Colton Parayko, and goaltender Jordan Binnington are the only four players left to have remained on the team for the entirety since winning the Stanley Cup.

Forwards Oskar Sundqvist and Sammy Blais were also on the team that year, but both departed the team through trade before returning to St. Louis over the last 9 months.
