ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Major League Baseball was under the spotlight with the league visiting the historic Rickwood Field, the oldest existing professional baseball park in the United States and the ground where the just-recently passed Willie Mays began his career in the Negro Leagues.
Overall, the event went about as perfect as the league and fans would've wanted, with rave reviews around from FOX's production of the event, to the experience leading up to the game which saw the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants in a tight 6-5 ballgame Thursday night.
"Overall, it was a wonderful night and very well planned out day" said Voice of the Cardinals John Rooney, who called the game for KMOX Thursday night. "They had a lot going on for the coaches, managers, and players to take in the experience at Rickwood. For the night with the presentation, the ballgame, it was a great time."
The event saw many special moments, from baseball legends Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Bonds, the latter being the godson of Mays making an appearance, to players helping honor Negro League legends before the game. Both the Cardinals and Giants wore uniforms that served as a tribute to the Negro Leagues, with the Cardinals honoring the St. Louis Stars, who won three Negro Leagues titles from 1928-1931.
