'Can't wait to be a Cardinal for life'┃Adam Wainwright re-signs with St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis Cardinals announced pitcher Adam Wainwright is coming back next season. The 40-year-old is the second-oldest pitcher in the National League this year, but is also having a near-Cy Young caliber season.

The announcement was made in a press conference Friday afternoon:

Last month, Wainwright announced he would be back to pitch again in 2022 in a video joined by his family:

The Cardinals also announced earlier this week that Wainwright will start next Wednesday's one-game Wild Card playoff matchup with either the Dodgers or Giants. It will be his ninth postseason (2006, 09, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19 and 20).

Wainwright is among the greatest pitchers in Cardinals history, ranking behind only Bob Gibson in team history for career strikeouts and his ERA is sixth-best in team history.

He'll also be looking to make some baseball history with his teammates of nearly two decades, Yadier Molina. They are only the fourth battery in MLB history to start 300 games together. With one more regular-season start, they'll tie Red Faber and Ray Schalk of the Chicago White Sox at 306.

With a full season of health, they could take the No. 1 spot from Mickey Lolich and Bill Freehan of the Detroit Tigers, who have 324 games together.
