ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis Cardinals announced Tuesday that pitcher Carlos Martinez has been placed on the injured list with an ankle injury. It was initially hurt on Friday during the celebration of fellow pitcher Jack Flaherty's home run.
Martinez was placed retroactive on the 10-day IL starting May 9. He pitched five innings on Saturday, the day after the Flaherty home run, and allowed five runs on six hits and five walks. He tweaked his ankle on the dugout steps during the HR celebration.
The 29-year-old said he pitched through the pain on Saturday because he wanted to help the team.
The Cardinals also recalled pitcher Johan Oviedo, who has made two starts this season for St. Louis and is 0-1 with a 4.61 ERA in 13.2 innings.
St. Louis is back in action Tuesday after an off day on Monday. They begin a six-game road trip against the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres. First pitch Tuesday is at 6:40 p.m. in Milwaukee.
