ST. LOUIS - Brendan Donovan is set to undergo season-ending surgery in Dallas on Wednesday, multiple Cardinal beat writers report.
Donovan will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a flexor strain on his right arm, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Donovan is expected to be healthy in time for Spring Training 2024.
Donovan was limited to a DH role since late-June, the last time played the field.
For Donovan, it ends his season on a whimper. Donovan headed into season working to add more power to his offense, which he achieved with hitting 11 home runs and upping his slugging percentage from .379 to .411 in his sophomore campaign in only 95 games. However, his overall offense regressed a bit, with his advanced stats like his OPS+ and WRC+ dropping off slightly a bit from 125 OPS+ his rookie campaign to a still quality 115 OPS+.
With the season-ending surgery for Donovan and the trade of SS Paul DeJong Tuesday, it opens more reps at both shortstop and designated hitter. Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker would likely be expected to see more reps at DH while a hole at SS could temporarily be filled the soon-to-be returning Tommy Edman, with the potential of the call-up of top prospect Masyn Winn on the horizon soon.
