ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The Cardinals first 40 games have already come and gone and the mood certainly feels like it's at an all-time low in Cardinal world.

Through the first 40 games of the season and after Sunday's victory to salvage a game against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cardinals record of 16-24, only a one win improvement compared to 2023.

While April started decently for expectations, the Month of May has been a struggle for the organization, with the Cardinals going only 2-8 so far in the month, which included a seven-game losing streak prior to Sunday's victory against the Brewers.

A big cause of the lack of improvement from 2023 to 2024 has come from a struggling Cardinals offense, which has posted only a 87 Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+), which is sixth-worst in all of Major League Baseball, according to Fangraphs.

Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak admits he is shocked by the struggles on offense when he talked to Tom Ackerman for his weekly interview on Sports on A Sunday Morning.

"You don't have to be a baseball expert to understand our offense is not producing enough to be successful right now," said Mozeliak. "It's honestly head-scratching because when you think about the players we are talking about, I don't think any of us would've thought we would see this lack of production from so many people."

Mozeliak says he understands that due to the struggles on offense, Cardinals margin for error is so thin right now.

"Our margins so small because (the Cardinals) are not putting up consistently enough runs to give any type of breathing room," said Mozeliak. "You see over the last week, any one little mistake ends up compounding situations and we find ourselves behind, trying to play catchup, and just not able to do it."

While any on the outside of the Cardinals organization are calling for change to the Cardinals to avoid another disastrous season, including a change at manager, John Mozeliak unsurprisingly still feels Marmol is fit for the job and that the team's struggles are more to blame on him than Marmol.

"I still think(Marmol) understands the job. I think he knows how to manage. I think he’s trying to put the right combination of players in, but at some level, you have to have some performance," said Mozeliak. "I understand fans are not happy with myself. They’re not happy with Oli. I don’t think anything I say here today is going to change that. So, I think we have to just keep trying to go back, trying to get this to work. We understand that if it doesn’t, people are going to be held accountable. And ultimately that starts with me."
