ST. LOUIS- The 2023 Trade Deadline is officially over and for the St. Louis Cardinals, it was a pretty active trade deadline, trading keys players on the roster to acquire controllable minor-league starting pitchers that can help the team in the future.
Cardinals manager Oli Marmol, who joined Total Information A.M. Wednesday says it was a tough day for the clubhouse.
"It's obviously not ideal (to be in this situation), but the situation called for it" Marmol told KMOX Sports Director Tom Ackerman, "I was lucky to be able to have conversations with (DeJong and Flaherty) prior to them leaving was very good."
Marmol says the trade for Flaherty was little tougher to swallow for him. Marmol managed Flaherty in the minors when both were still in High-A so there was longer relationship between the two of them.
"When you are talking about a competitor, (Flaherty) is hitting to a tee," Marmol said on Flaherty, "From the second he walks through the doors, everything about winning. I've really enjoyed my time around him. He was a guy that really cared about the organization and doing well."
Marmol also discussed the club's decision to end infielder Brendan Donovan season early, as Donovan is set to undergo surgery in Dallas on his right shoulder with the same procedure that formers Cardinals relief pitcher Seth Maness underwent.
"I love this kid," Marmol said, "He didn't want to do (the surgery) until today. This kid is a competitor, cares about winning and his teammates, that Donovan for sure."
