Cardinals fire manager Mike Shildt: 'It was not about wins and losses'

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis Cardinals fired manager Mike Shildt over "philosophical differences." The team made the announcement in a video conference Thursday morning.

It comes after Shildt led St. Louis to a franchise-record 17-game winning streak and a playoff birth for the third season in a row.

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak did not discuss what the specific differences of opinion were.

"It was not about wins and loses, it was really at a higher level," Mozeliak says.
"We just weren't in a spot where we thought we were positioning ourselves for success, not just today, but long term."

He says he informed Shildt of the decision this morning and said was "shocked" when told.

As for who's next, a new hire could be announced in the next month. Mozeliak said there are names on the current staff that could be candidates, but also is planning to search outside the organization. He says he hopes this isn't something that "drags on" through mid-November.

Shildt, 53, has a history with the Cardinals that dates back to 2004 when he was hired as a scout and minor league coach. He debuted with the major-league coaching staff in 2017 and was promoted to manager when Mike Matheny was fired in July 2018.

He has a career managerial record of 451-252 (.559%) over the last three and a half seasons.
