CLEVELAND (KMOX) - In a scary sight for the St. Louis Cardinals, All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado couldn't finish the game after being hit by a pitch on his right elbow.

The team says he was removed due to a right forearm contusion and that his status is day-to-day. After the game, manger Mike Shildt sounded positive saying Arenado should be back in the lineup Friday.

"(Arenado) is confident, as is the trainers. We'll know more tomorrow," Shildt said.

The HBP happened in top of the fifth against the Cleveland Indians. Pitcher Zach Plesac hit Arenado with a 94 MPH fastball on the second pitch of the at bat.

He was checked out by the team trainer and stayed in the game to run. Then he took the field in the bottom of the fifth, but was removed before the half-inning began after talking again to the trainer and manager Mike Shildt. Edmundo Sosa came into the game for him at third base.

Arenado leads St. Louis with 20 home runs and 61 RBI this year. Coming into Wednesday's game he was leading all National League third basemen in home runs and doubles (27) and ranks 2nd in RBI to Manny Machado’s 68.
