ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Cardinals outfield prospect Victor Scott II has turned eyes of many Cardinals fans over the last 12 months, leading to many calls from the outside of the organization to call for the team to have him in the Opening Day roster in Los Angeles next Thursday.
But unfortunately, Scott II will not make the Opening Day roster as the Cardinals announced seven cuts Saturday, and among the cuts included Scott II.
One hand, Scott II exclusion wasn't too surprising. While Scott II has seen rampant eyes on him after a 94 stolen base season in the minors last year, Scott II is still only 23-years-old and has not yet seen more action in Triple-A.
President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak talked to KMOX this week, indicating hesitance to rush him and avoid the issues the club faced with Jordan Walker to begin the 2023 season.
Alongside Scott II, the Cardinals optioned utility players Alfonso RIvas II and Jared Young, 1B Luken Baker, right handed relief pitcher Nick Robertson to Triple-A Memphis and reassigned infielder Cesar Prieto to Minor-league camp with Scott II.
With the cuts, it will leave the Cardinals Major League Camp at 35. But with five players in starters Sonny Gray and Drew Rom, reliever Keynan Middleton and outfielders Tommy Edman and Lars Nootbaar all set to start the season on the injured list, the Cardinals will only need to cut four more players from the Camp.
Catcher Pedro Pages and non-roster invitee Thomas Saggese all but likely, and good chance infielder Jose Fermin will join those two among the final cuts due to the depth in the Cardinals infield. The final cut will be a pitcher, with the Cardinals currently having 14 pitchers in the camp left and teams can only carry 13.
