ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A member of the St. Louis Cardinals organization will be representing the United States of America in Tokyo for the Olympics – but it's not the team's No. 1 prospect that most were expecting to see.
USA Baseball announced its 24-man roster for the 2020 Olympics on Friday and one big omission was the man who started two games for USA during the qualifying tournament – Cardinals 21-year-old pitcher Matthew Liberatore. But recently-signed Cardinals pitcher Brandon Dickson is on the roster.
St. Louis signed Dickson, 36, to a Minor League deal last month. It's his second stint with St. Louis, as he pitched 14.2 innings for St. Louis between 2011-12. He then went to the Nippon Professional Baseball league in Japan, where he's had a 3.32 ERA in eight seasons.
Since rejoining the Cardinals organization, Dickson has allowed three runs in 3.2 innings of work with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds.
