SAN DIEGO (KMOX) - Three unavoidable things in life are death, taxes and Yadier Molina doing something newsworthy in a playoff game.
The 38-year-old catcher played in his 100th career postseason game, recorded his 100th career postseason hit and made a catch that gets crazier each time you watch it.
In the third inning, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright struck out MVP candidate Fernando Tatis Jr. on a foul tip. It had both Wainwright and Molina grinning.
It left the rest of the baseball word with our jaws dropped. See for yourself:
The pitched deflected off the bat of Tatis and directly into Molina's glove – the catcher never blinked.
It was explained after the game that it happened partially because Wainwright and Molina got crossed up. Molina thought a 75-mph curve was coming down, but Wainwright instead threw an 89.3 mph 2-seam fastball
But it worked out well for St. Louis.
“Nobody else catches that ball ... He is a wizard,” Wainwright said. “For him to catch that ball, it was truly amazing.
“It really was. There’s no other way to put it, it was amazing. He doesn’t even know how he caught it. I asked him as we were walking off the field. I said, 'How did you catch that?' He said, 'I have no idea.'”
A deciding Game 3 between the Cardinals and Padres is Friday night at 6:08 p.m. CT. Coverage on KMOX begins at 5 p.m.
