ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - This offseason for the St. Louis Cardinals is going to look different than previous ones according to Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak.
Mozeliak joined 'Sports On A Sunday Morning' with KMOX Sports Director Tom Ackerman almost a full week after the Cardinals announced that Chaim Bloom was named Mozeliak's successor as president of baseball operations and would take over the role after next season.
Mozeliak previewed the upcoming 2024-2025 offseason for the Cardinals, which Mozeliak says will look a whole lot different compared to previous offseasons Mozeliak has experienced in his baseball executive career.
"Ultimately this offseason might look a lot different than the previous 17 or 25 I've been involved in," said Mozeliak. "Ultimately I think we will still have an exciting product to put on the field."
"I do think expectations for some of our younger players to take that step forward will be our offseason focus so we see that type of return when we get back on the field, but it is going to be a different offseason."
Mozeliak also discussed the Cardinals parting ways with hitting coach Turner Ward. Mozeliak says that while Ward was "a great guy" ultimately it's a results based business and the Cardinals hitting was not performing to expectations, especially with runners in scoring position.
"We struggled all year scoring runs and that's the name of the game," said Ward. "You watch these postseason games, look at the Mets, I mean, it wasn't like power, it was just trying to string some hits together and making the most for it and it was tough for us." said Mozeliak.
"Sometimes you have to find change and hopefully the next guy we have in here, has the ability to communicate with our guys and and getting more out of them."
