As Spring Training approaches, the Cardinals are preparing to get back into the swing of things. Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozelaik joined KMOX to talk about the off season and what to expect this spring. Right now, he said, the team is preparing for the annual Winter Warm-Up which is set to take place at Live! By Loews for the first time.
“I'm glad we're back open for business. You know, I think that's exciting for fans,” Mozelaik said.” And obviously, the last few years have been a little disappointing, not being able to have this event. But I am looking forward to the change. I guess you know, you're sort of used to your routine and how you go about it. But I hope this works.”
One question Mozelaik expects to get in the coming weeks from media is about how the team is handling money after speculation that they may increase their payroll during the off season.
“We did have an opportunity to increase payroll, which will be higher than what we played at last year. So that's factor one. And number two is, you know, just because you have resources, you're not just gonna go spend it wildly on something that doesn't make sense,” he said. “I mean, we knew what we had to accomplish this offseason, we went into it with the hopes of doing it. And then as other things presented themselves or unfolded, it just didn't get to the point where we were excited enough to necessarily do it.”
