ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The Cardinals offense is struggling to begin the 2024 season.
Through the Cardinals first 16 games of the season, while the defense and bullpen have look impressive so far and the rotation has been solid, the same can not be said for the hitting, as the Cardinals generating a .685 OPS, .296 wOBA, a 84 weighted runs created plus (wRC+), all three stats being in the the bottom three of the National League to begin the year.
While there has been some impressive performances offensively from the likes of shortstop Maysn Winn, utilty player Brendan Donovan and catchers Ivan Herrera and Willson Contreras, the Cardinals big bats in Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman has mostly been quiet.
The lack of bats have been rather noticeable in the team's series finales so far, with the Cardinals having been unable to win a game in the final game of a series yet, going 0-5 in series finales so far.
John Rooney, the Voice of the Cardinals joined Total Information A.M. Monday in ahead of the club's final series ever at the Oakland Coliseum against the A's to discuss the struggling offense.
"They just couldn't find the key hit the last couple of games after a really good offensive attack Friday against the D-Backs," said Rooney. "They were getting on base and they were in position to where they could go in front of some really good pitching. They had two opportunities to go after (D-Backs pitcher) Zac Gallen (Sunday) but they couldn't get a run in."
Despite the struggles to begin the year, Rooney believes that with the upcoming series against the A's, the Cardinals offense have an opportunity to potentially get going and liked some signs that the offense showed Friday.
"They had a 6-0 lead, lost that, but then the Cardinals came back put up a run and got two more. It was like 'alright that's a blip in the road, but we're just going to pick up where we left off.'" said Rooney.
