ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Larry Walker says it was his "generous" gift to the St. Louis Cardinals that he retired after the 2005 season, just in time for them to win a World Series in 2006. But the real gift may have been Walker's opportunity to play in St. Louis.
He tells KMOX that he wished he could have spent a lot more than just one-and-a-half seasons with the Cardinals. He says "10 years" with St. Louis would have been nice.
"It's an amazing thing to put that uniform on," Walker says. "When you put on one in the clubhouse along with the pants and the red shoes and you walk out of that locker room and the steps to the dugout, I tell ya, it's one of those feelings that indescribable. You really gotta be there to feel it."
Walker compared the feeling of playing for St. Louis to getting the call last year that he'd been voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
You can hear the full conversation Walker had with KMOX's Mike Claiborne and Kevin Wheeler on Wednesday's Cardinals Countdown to Opening Day show, here:
Walker made it to the World Series with St. Louis in 2004, then was one game away from going back in 2005. Although he wasn't part of the 2006 World Series team, then general manager Walk Jocketty and manager Tony La Russa later presented Walker with a championship ring.
"Cardinal Nation was a complete joy to finish things up with," Walker says.
