ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Sunday is the final game of the St. Louis Cardinals 2021 regular season, it's also the last broadcast for the Voice of the Cardinals Mike Shannon, who is retiring after his 50th season. Before the finale, Shannon was honored with gifts and kind words from special guests, and showered with love from the 45,000 fans in attendance.
It appeared to nearly be too much for the former player who has played in and called a combined 10 World Series with the Cardinals (three as a player and seven in the booth). He gave a brief speech, pushing through tears, which you can listen to in the audio at the top of this page.
"Thank you. Thank you all very much," Shannon said. "Thank you. Thank you so much. You're the reason we're all here. You the fans. You've made it so nice for me over the years."
You can listen to the full ceremony, below, which included speeches by Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr., Hall of Fame writer Rick Hummel and KMOX host Charlie Brennan. It was MC'd by Shannon's broadcast partner of nearly two decades, John Rooney:
