ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The sports world lost a icon Thursday as the world learned that Bob Uecker, known by many as "Mr. Baseball", died at the age of 90.
Many knew Uecker for his longtime broadcasting run with the Milwaukee Brewers going back to 1971, his portrayal as Harry Doyle in 'Major League' and perhaps the "I must be in the front row!" guy from those classic Miller Lite ads.
Uecker won the Ford C. Frick Award back in 2003, and earned a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown alongside other great baseball voices like Vin Scully, Ernie Harwell, Herb Carneal, and Mel Allen.
Uecker was given the nickname "Mr. Baseball" as a dig at his playing career, which saw him hit .200 over his six seasons playing catcher with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals.
Uecker never missed an opportunity to poke fun at his foibles on the baseball diamond.
In honor of Uecker, KMOX has decided to dig up some audio from the archives of a legendary roundtable conversation that took place back in 2017 between Uecker, late legendary Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon, and Mike Claiborne.
Shannon and Uecker were both teammates with one another on the Cardinals back in 1964-65, with both being a part of the World Series-winning 1964 St. Louis Cardinals team.
Uecker and Shannon would go on to have legendary radio careers once their playing careers ended, with Uecker, of course, calling Brewers games, while Shannon would go on to spend 50 years in the broadcast booth calling Cardinals before retiring after the 2021 season.
