ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Thursday marked the deadline for MLB players to file for salary arbitration.
The Cardinals had six players this winter who were arbitration eligible: relief pitchers Ryan Helsley, John King, Andrew Kittredge, JoJo Romero, outfielder Dylan Carlson, and utility player Tommy Edman.
On Thursday, the Cardinals were able to reach deals with all but one player.
The team announced Thursday they have agreed to one-year deals with five of their six arbitration eligible players, with Edman being the lone exception.
Salary figurers were not released by the club, but a few players reportedly got deals above initial expectations.
Carlson and Helsley reportedly got $2.35 million and $3.8 million in their agreements, respectively, according to the MLB.com's John Denton and St. Louis Post Dispatch's Derrick Goold.
MLB Trade Rumors projected Carlson and Helsley to get $1.8 million and $3 million respectively.
Kittredge, who was recently acquired last week in a deal with the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for OF Richie Palacios got $2.63 million in his final year of arbitration, according to Goold. MLB Trade Rumors projected $2.3 million.
Edman is in the second year of arbitration. It is unclear the gap is between the salaries that were exchanged at the moment, but MLB Trade Rumors projected Edman to get $6.5 million, while Spotrac projected $8 million.
As a reminder, Edman and the Cardinals can still negotiate a deal until the hearings, which are usually scheduled in February. But the Cardinals have a file-and-trial approach when it comes to arbitration, meaning unless a multi-year contract is in the works for Edman, an arbitration hearing is likely.
