“This is truly going to be one of the great honors of my entire life.”

That’s what Willson Contreras had to say in an essay for The Players Tribune, where he discussed the legacy of Yadier Molina and what it means to Contreras to be taking the position of a baseball legend.

On Thursday’s Sports Open Line, host Joe Pott talked more about Contreras’  five-year, $87.5 million contract and what it means for him to be coming from a rival club. Plus, Rob Rains of STLSportsPage.com joined the show to talk about the move.

“The interesting thing about Contreras defensively is, it's hard to compare anybody to Molina, even though I think Molina's slipped a little bit as he got older,” Rains said. “He wasn't the defensive catcher that he was in his prime. And that's to be expected. But I also think that with the rules that are going to be changing at some point here in the next couple of years, the pitch framing, all that kind of stuff, the things that Yadi did so well might not matter.”
