ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A St. Louis CITY SC fan favorite's time with the club has come to an end.

On Friday, St. Louis CITY SC officially announced that midfielder Indiana Vassilev has been traded to the Philadelphia Union. CITY SC will receive $1 million in guaranteed general allocation money (GAM) over the next two seasons.

MLS insider Tom Bogert was first to report the Union had agreed to a deal in principle to acquire Vassilev from CITY SC.

"We thank Indy for everything he gave to the city of St. Louis and the crest," Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel said in a statement. “"It’s never easy to move on from players we invested in but it is part of the business and we’re proud to have helped Indy develop over these years."

"Our aim now is to come out stronger from this trade by reinvesting as soon as possible to bolster the team."

Vassilev joined CITY SC in 2022, after being selected as one of five players from the 2022 MLS Expansion draft. Before joining CITY SC, Vassilev spent two seasons on loan with Inter Miami from English Premier League club Aston Villa.

During Vassilev's time with CITY SC, he appeared in 75 matches across all competitions, scoring six goals and 11 assists and playing nearly 4,600 minutes for CITY SC.

Vassilev was also able to receive a callup to the US men's national team during his time with CITY SC, as a part of their January camp last month. Vassilev was able to notch his first two career senior internationals caps in matches against Venezuela and Costa Rica

The deal to the Union will reunite Vassilev with former CITY SC head coach Bradley Carnell, who now manages the Union.

The Union last season finished 12th in the Eastern Conference standings, missing the MLS playoffs entirely for the first time since 2017. The Union begin 2025 on Saturday, traveling to play Orlando City SC.

CITY SC will host Colorado Rapids on Saturday at Energizer Park, marking the MLS regular season debut for new CITY SC head coach Olof Mellberg.
