After years of waiting for Major League Soccer in St. Louis, the first-ever match didn't disappoint. In Austin, Texas Saturday night, St. Louis City SC scored two goals in the final minutes of the match to rally from behind and beat Austin FC 3-2.
In the first half, defender Tim Parker headed in the historic first goal in franchise history. Austin FC equalized in the waning seconds of the first half, then took the lead in the second. But Jared Stroud re-tied the game 2-2 in the 78th minute and Brazilian-born forward Klauss scored the game winner in the 86th minute.
After the game, head coach Bradley Carnell acknowledged the years that went into getting the opening game right.
"Just extremely grateful to be sitting here tonight and to start off the season with three points is extremely humbling," he said.
City SC will make its home debut Saturday, March 4 against Charlotte FC at CITYPARK in downtown St. Louis.
