“Of course, neither side got everything they wanted in this deal. But that’s what it means to compromise and forge consensus—the heart of democracy,” said President Biden. “As the deal goes to the entire Senate, there is still plenty of work ahead to bring this home. There will be disagreements to resolve and more compromise to forge along the way.”
Biden said the infrastructure package would create good-paying, union jobs across the country. Plumbers and pipefitters, the president said, will be able to replace lead water pipes -- particularly in low-income communities -- so all children can drink clean water.
Other efforts the bill will fund include repairing roads and bridges, building transmission lines and upgrading power grids, and creating a national network of electric vehicle charging stations.
“This deal signals to the world that our democracy can function, deliver, and do big things,” Biden said in a White House statement.”As we did with the transcontinental railroad and the interstate highway, we will once again transform America and propel us into the future.”
Biden noted the infrastructure package would not increase taxes on citizens making less than $400,000. The bill also avoids taxes on gasoline or electric vehicles, which some Republicans had proposed.
Senators will hold a procedural vote on the bill Wednesday afternoon.
Its passage still faces some obstacles. The Congressional Progressive Caucus said its members’ votes are not guaranteed until they examine the details and until the reconciliation bill passes to fund other priorities.
