SHREWSBURY (KMOX) -- Schnucks says it's closing the Shrewsbury location it acquired in 2018.

The locally-based grocer bought the store as part of a group from Minnesota-based SuperValu, which was liquidating the Shop 'n Save chain.

That wasn't the first time Schnucks purchased this particular location on Chippewa. In 1986, when Kroger pulled out of St. Louis, it sold the store to Schnucks, which would later move down the street upon purchasing the then-National supermarket at Hampton Village.

"Anytime a store lease comes up for renewal, we review its past and current performance as a normal course of business," CEO Todd Schnuck said in a statement. "Even in the midst of the pandemic, when other stores saw growth, our Shrewsbury location continued to underperform."

Two possible early indications this was coming: while the new owners had remodeled most former Shop 'n Save stores to Schnucks decor, this one still looked like a legacy Shop 'n Save inside.

Also, Shrewsbury was one of three locations temporarily closed at the start of the pandemic to send staff elsewhere. Another one of those, the Oakwood store in Alton, IL, would never re-open.

Dierbergs, Walmart, and Aldi all have Shrewsbury locations.

There are two other Schnucks within three miles: at Hampton Village, and at Gravois and Hampton.

The location's 57 workers will have a chance to transfer to other stores. Schnuck said: "We thank our teammates for giving it their best."

Prescriptions will be transferred to the CVS Pharmacy inside Schnucks at Hampton Village.

Schnucks Shrewsbury closes June 27th. The lease expires November 13th.

Schnucks has 110 stores, including 79 in its headquarters metro area.
