ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis-based Spire is reacting to the U.S. Supreme Court's rejection of an appeal to a lower court's decision that could close a natural gas pipeline running through parts of Illinois and Missouri.

"While we're disappointed by the decision from the Supreme Court, it's important to note the pipeline will continue to operate under the temporary certificate FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) issued December 2, 2021," Spire spokesperson Jason Merrill told KMOX News.

Merrill says the commission is doing a soil review process, "We will continue to cooperate with the FERC and other stakeholders to inform their analysis. That review continues."

The STL pipeline connects with another in western Illinois. A lawsuit filed by the Environmental Defense Fund two years ago called the pipeline unnecessary and harmful to land in its path.

"We're confident that when people have the opportunity to review everything with the STL pipeline and the benefits it's brought to the St. Louis region, they will see a need to keep the pipeline operational for the long term," Merrill said.
