St. Louis (KMOX) -- St. Louis County Acting Health Director Faisal Khan spoke to KMOX this week and says our area is in for a tough time ahead due to COVID-19.

"I remain extremely worried about the COVID situation in the St. Louis region," Dr. Khan said.

"I understand people are frustrated when they say 'You said the vaccines would take care of this back in November and then you said we could take our masks off in March or April if we get vaccinated. (But) now you're telling us to get vaccinated and put the masks back on?'.

"Yes, we are. And there's a reason for that," Dr. Khan said.

The Acting Health Director describes the fight against COVID as a war where the enemy is a shape-shifting mutant. He says in order to win, tactics must be changed to combat the new threat.

Dr. Khan says the variant that's lurking is Lambda out of Peru.

He also calls the vaccine a coat of armor, but the enemy is changing tactics and has the potential to penetrate that armor.
