Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias says his office rejected more than 300 requests for vanity and personalized license plates in the year of 2024.
According to the Illinois Secretary of State's office, out of 60,537 requests for vanity and personalized license plates last year, 335 were denied due to the inflammatory and offensive nature of the requests or because they were difficult to read.
Some of the rejected license plates requests include HOKTUAH, MUNCH, JAGWEED, ILLCUTU, AXEHOLE, HOHOHOE and ABADMF.
Some license plates requests like MWMWMWM and OOQQOO were rejected due to the difficulty to read them and the potential problems it could pose for law enforcement.
"Illinoisans consistently display a great deal of creativity when choosing their customized license plates, but the plates that hit the road must meet the standards of good taste and decency," Giannoulias said.
"Our team are well-versed in lecherous language and sneaky swearing, all of which are rejected and placed on our permanent prohibited list."
The office says the ever-growing rejection list currently stands at more than 8015 license plates combinations.
Currently in the state of Illinois, there are over 811,000 vehicles that have either a vanity or personalized plate, with over 531,000 of those being personalized plates.
According to the office, Illinois drivers have to pay an extra $94 for a new vanity plate, which contains all letters, or they have to pay an extra $47 for a new personalized plate, which is a combination of letters and numbers.
