ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The U.S. Postal Service may shut-down a regional distribution center in Springfield, Illinois, and centralize the work in St. Louis.

USPS is considering turning 58 sites into local distribution centers and one of those locations includes the Springfield, Illinois site.

USPS says most mail collected around Springfield "is ultimately destined for outside the immediate area" and the "business case" supports sending processing to St. Louis.

For example Mail sent from Springfield, Illinois to another destination in Springfield, Illinois would have to first make a trip to St. Louis, under a U.S. Postal Service plan to increase efficiency.

USPS says first-class mail and local mail in central Illinois would still be delivered within two days.
