The holiday weekend saw a substantial increase in car break-ins downtown.

St. Louis Police Captain Pierre Benoist said there were a total of 56 car break-ins in Downtown and Downtown West. Of those 56, Benoist said, six weapons were also taken.

On a typical weekend, St. Louis police see ten to 15 car break-ins, making this a substantial increase.

The 12-hour mandatory shifts for officers ended recently, which means the number of police on the streets was the lowest it's been since June. But Benoist said he doesn't think that's the reason break-ins increased.
