ST. CHARLES (KMOX) - An upgrade to the National Weather Service's radar system that was scheduled for Thursday is now delayed because of the threat of severe storms on Friday and into early next week.
National Weather Service Lead Forecaster Jared Maples tells KMOX News that the planned outage will now be on April 6. However, when the radar goes down, the weather service still has access to the terminal doppler radar near St. Louis Lambert Airport.
"While it's not strong enough to extend out ninety plus miles like this radar does, it does give us coverage over the populace of the St. Louis Metro area," he said.
He added that the National Weather Service has 122 other radar sites, including Kansas City, Springfield and areas to the South, like Paducah.
The required maintenance will be over by April 12 or 13.
