LONDON (KNX) — Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane — best known in the U.S. for his role as Hagrid in the "Harry Potter" film franchise — died at age 72, his agency confirmed Friday.
Coltrane's agent Belinda Wright said he died Friday at a hospital in Scotland but did not elaborate on a cause.
In addition to starring as Hagrid in each of the eight "Harry Potter" movies, Coltrane played a Russian crime boss in James Bond movies "GoldenEye" and "The World is Not Enough." Other appearances included "Van Helsing," and "Ocean's Twelve."
His rise to fame accelerated with the 1990s series "Cracker" on British television, where he played hard-bitten detective Dr. Edward "Fitz" Fitzgerald. The British Academy Television Awards honored him with its best actor title three consecutive times from 1994-1996.
"He was forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty and after 40 years of being proud to be called his agent," said agent Belinda Wright. "I shall miss him."
Coltrane is survived by his two children, sister, and ex-wife.
