A MetroLink passenger has been accused of stabbing a St. Louis Sheriff's deputy who had removed him from the train last week. Now, the Sheriff is calling for metal detectors on the light rail line.

Sheriff Vernon Betts said the passenger was removed form a MetroLink at the main station Downtown on 14th street, when he first tried to spray mace on the deputy.

"He then pulled out a knife and as they're going to the ground, he stabbed my deputy in the hand and the knife hits my deputy's leg and he gets stabbed in his leg," Betts said. "So my deputy had to go to the hospital and get stitches in his finger and in his leg."

Betts said his deputies have confiscated several guns and knives from MetroLink passengers in the past three years and he wants metal detectors for passengers.

A spokesperson for MetroLink tells KMOX that metal detectors are "under consideration," as they design new platforms to enhance security--but "no decision has been made yet."
