SAINT LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - Ameren Missouri is downplaying a report by a power grid monitoring group that says there could be power outages across the Midwest this summer.

Ameren Missouri says it's ready -- it can generate up to fifteen percent more electricity than it needs. However, Ameren Missouri's Senior Director of Energy Management and Trading, Andrew Meyer, says they do have to share power in a 15-state pact with other regions that might have outages. "To the extent that any supply deficiencies are great enough that they would cascade in other areas, we will be part of that." Meyer adds Ameren Missouri would provide help. When asked if the lights could go off in St. Louis area communities this summer, Meyer says, "the risk is relatively minor for the summer."
The North American Electric Reliability Corporation warns there could be power outages across the country from extreme heat, wildfires and because of the transition to green power like wind and solar.
