St. Louis (KMOX) -- The American Red Cross says it's experiencing an emergency blood and platelet shortage.

Their supply is at the lowest post-summer level since 2015. The Red Cross says it needs 10,000 additional blood products each week over the next month to recover and meet hospital and patient needs.

Distributions to hospitals remain strong and continue to outpace donations.

The Red Cross says blood donor turnout is reaching the lowest levels of the year largely because many are concerned about a recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

Donors of all types are needed but especially Type O.

As a thank you, anyone who donates through September 30 will get a Red Cross t-shirt plus a haircut coupon from Sport Clips. Those who donate in October get a free Zaxby's sandwich.
