After countless calls for change, APA announces takeover of county animal shelter

For years, animal rights advocates have called for a reputable animal organization to manage the St. Louis County Animal Care and Adoption Center.

The calls have come after years of not having a veterinarian on staff, reports of unauthorized and inhumane euthanizations, dogs not being walked, rapid staff turnover, and litigation.

But on Wednesday, the APA of Missouri announced it would be taking over management of the animals' care, wellbeing and adoptions. The APA's Sarah Javier told KMOX they are looking to hire vets, animal care staff and a behavioral enrichment coordinator -- and they'll be launching a foster care program from day one.

"Transparency and openness is really important to the APA, as you know, and we have a lot of work to do between now and the operations date of December 5," Javier said. "But we are really looking forward to being able to share our successes with media as well as the community. And we know that there will be a lot of successes."

Javier said the transition won't be an easy situation. However, she's optimistic.

"We are definitely up for it. We care deeply about animals and believe that the animals in St. Louis County deserve an opportunity to thrive and be cared for in a loving, safe, clean environment while they wait for their forever families," she said. "And that is what we are going to provide for them."
