Fairview Heights, Ill. (KMOX) - A Belleville man is in custody, accused of opening fire on Fairview Heights Police officers, Sunday night, with the intent to kill them. Illinois State Police say 22-year-old Elijah Thompson is charged with four counts of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated battery, and one count of resisting arrest.

ISP says one of the injured, identified Monday as Officer Molly Muennich, remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, after being shot in the face. The other officers had lesser injuries.

Investigators say the three Fairview Heights police were investigating a call about a residential prowler when they encountered Thompson and he started firing.
