ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Since last fall, police have reported at least seven shooting incidents on Interstate 70 in St. Louis – the most recent cases involve a teen who was critically injured and a woman who was killed this month. The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) is coming in to help local police.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief John Hayden released a statement saying MSHP Troopers will be doing periodic enforcement on weekend evenings and overnight hours, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. It's uncommon for troopers to patrol within the city limits.
Police say they're investigating the latest shooting on I-70 that happened Tuesday night. They say a teenager was shot in the thigh and shoulder while driving in his car near Goodfellow Boulevard. He was conscious and breathing when he was rushed to the hospital.
Prior to that, a woman was shot and killed on I-70 near Cass Avenue on April 14. The 32-year-old's car was riddle with bullets and overturned on the shoulder.
Overall, at least 11 people have been hurt or killed in shootings on I-70 in St. Louis since last April. Police don't believe the highway shootings are connected.
