(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Used-car buyers are urged to take extra caution when car shopping, as scammers are taking advantage of Hurricane Ian to sell flood-damaged cars.

"These cars could have some electrical problems. They can have mold and mildew. And they could obviously have some mechanical problems as a result of this flooding, so I think consumers, overall, if they knew it was flooded in some way, they wouldn't have bought it," said Steve Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau.

Bernas said the best way to avoid accidentally buying a flood-damaged car is by doing research on sellers.

"It's up to consumers to determine who they're dealing with and do they trust them? Do they know them? Did they do any background research on whoever's selling the vehicle to them?” Bernas said.

Bernas also recommends getting an inspection done by a trusted mechanic if people aren't sure about whether or not a car has flood damage.

Scammers can be reported to the Better Business Bureau website.
