Bob Costas slams Trump on KMOX for hosting Saudi-backed golf tour at his New Jersey club

On Monday, sports commentator Bob Costas joined "The Show" on KMOX to talk about the MLB trade deadline, and the LIV golf tour. And, he shared some choice words about former President Donald Trump's decision to host the golf tournament -- which is backed by the Saudi Arabian government -- at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey.

"It's just startling to me, how many brainwashed Trump cultists cannot make these distinctions. Can you imagine any president in your lifetime, Republican, Democrat, whatever, doing something like this?" Costas said. "Virtually in the shadow of the World Trade Center, more than 700 residents of New Jersey died on 9/11 21 years ago, some of them from the immediate Bedminster area, the 9/11 families with credible evidence that the Saudi regime provided logistical support for the terrorists on that day."

Costas clarified that he didn't want to vilify all people with Saudi Arabian backgrounds, but that supporting the Saudi government shouldn't be accepted.

"We're certainly condemning the government, and its ongoing human rights atrocities and their connection to 9/11," Costas said. "Can you imagine any person of consequence in public life in politics in America, especially somebody who declares themselves 'America first,' and has some distorted version of patriotism, doing something like this thumbing their noses at the 9/11 families?"

Costas acknowledged that he isn't popular for talking politics -- but that some things are worth talking about, even for a sports commentator like himself.

"I used to be pretty close to universally popular, I was a nice guy. I knew a lot about sports," he joked. "And then, you know, there are certain things that aren't really political. They're just common sense. That just matters of decency. I'm not an extreme leftist, not even close. I'm a centrist guy."
