In a rare show of bipartisanship, Rep. Cori Bush and Sen. Josh Hawley have come together to pen a letter asking for additional testing for radioactive material at Jana Elementary School.

Last fall, tests by a private company revealed elevated levels of radioactive contamination at the Florissant elementary school, likely from the nearby Coldwater Creek. But a later investigation by the Army Corps of Engineers refuted the radiation claims, saying levels were not significantly higher than anywhere else.

Some parents are skeptical of the test results, and have meanwhile had to send their kids to different schools, which raised further concerns about the accuracy of the test results, Bush and Hawley say.

In their letter to Lieutenant General Scott Spellmon, Bush and Hawley write that "following the closure of Jana Elementary School, students and parents have had their lives upended while waiting for answer and help from the federal government."

They also ask that the investigation ensures "transparency and independent verification throughout the testing process," and that the Hazelwood school district be reimbursed for the testing that has already been done.
