
SAINT LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - New estimates indicate the St. Louis area continues to lose residents, with the city of St. Louis falling below 300,000 and St. Louis county falling below one million.

New census bureau estimates show the city's population fell from more than 301,000 in 2020 to 293,000 as of last July. St. Louis County fell from just over a million to 997,000 thousand.
St. Charles County grew by 5,000 people over that time. Jefferson County grew by a thousand, and Franklin County by a few hundred. The east-side counties of St. Clair, Madison and Monroe also lost residents.
The metro area as a whole lost 10,000 residents since 2020. It now has 2.8 million people, just ahead of fast-growing Charlotte, North Carolina. Kansas City added 7,000 residents. It has a metro population of 2.2. million.
