St. Louis metro not top-20 in US for first time in 100 years, census shows

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The newest U.S. Census data released on Thursday showed a solid increase in population for areas like St. Louis, St. Charles and Lincoln Counties. But a big loss in the City of St. Louis helped drop the metro area on the list of largest regions in the US.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis is now outside the top 20 for the first time in more than a century. Baltimore has surpassed St. Louis.

Here are some of the most interesting numbers for our metropolitan region:
• St. Louis metropolitan area grew 1.2% over the past decade; Stayed just over the 300,000 mark
• St. Louis County grew by .5% and is now over the 1,000,000 mark
• Counties that saw the largest population increases: St. Charles County with 12%, Warren County more than 9% and Lincoln County with 13%
• There was a 20% drop in residents under 18 the City of St. Louis
• Overall, Missouri’s population increased by 2.77%, from 5.98 million to 6.15 million people
